Overview

Located a precise two-day march northwest of Scholar's Landing (the colloquially named western docks of Locus Verity), Ledgerton stands as an anomaly in Scieles: a prosperity hub entirely disconnected from the water. While the rest of the nation flows along the Canal Latitudes, Ledgerton dominates the solid earth of the western plains. It is a settlement of straight lines, meticulously plotted crop rotations, and logistical perfection.

The Golden Grid

The surrounding landscape is referred to by locals as "The Golden Grid." Unlike the organic sprawl of ancient farms, the fields around Ledgerton are measured into perfect hectares, separated by paved service lanes rather than hedges.

  • The Dry-Haul: Since the village lacks canal access, it relies on the "Dry-Haul"—a fleet of heavy, reinforced wagons pulled by draft animals bred for stamina. These caravans monopolize the main road (The Axiom Way) heading southeast, delivering perishables like dairy, eggs, and soft fruits that would spoil on the slower canal barges.
  • Scientific Agriculture: The farmers here do not pray for harvest; they calculate it. Following the principles of the Age of Reason, soil acidity is tested daily, and irrigation is managed through a complex system of cisterns and hand-pumps, removing the need for "divine rain."

Atmosphere

Ledgerton is quiet, smelling of turned earth and drying hay. There is a perceptible lack of superstition here; scarecrows are built to aerodynamic standards rather than resembling effigies, and the locals speak in terms of yields, margins, and distance-to-market. It is a place where nature has been thoroughly tamed by mathematics.
